Made by Gardeners - For Gardeners
Romulan Genetics started in 2017 with a single mission in mind; to bring our beloved family grown strain, Romulan, back to the growers and cultivators who sought her. That mission stemmed from conversations held with well respected hemp farmers, who told us that Romulan was always a strain they wish that they could get back one day, but they feared she had been lost to time. And those conversations were all started when word was spread that our founder, Jake, was growing a cut of original Romulan. While the mission that Romulan Genetics sought out to achieve was fairly quickly realized, it was evident that there was more we could do on our end instead of just giving clones of our cut away in the hopes that it would spread out eventually. So the mission evolved into hunting for a Romulan male from our old seed stock, that was worthy of breeding with and creating regular seeds. That has been our main focus and goal here.. to bring Romulan back. But many have asked us, "How is that even possible?!"
Romulan was first known by a very different name: Port Alberni Pinebud. In California, it was called Pine Mtn. bud among a few other names. But it was all coming from the same source, that group of veterans who grew and met during camping trips together. They started meeting up, and eventually working together on the plants they were breeding. It started well before Jake's father got involved, with veterans returning home from the Korean war. They brought back seeds from an amazing strain they had sampled, called Thai. The Korean Thai seeds were grown back home in the BC area, and Norcal area but these veterans found it very difficult to grow in those regions. Eventually when Jake's father and other veterans got involved, they introduced a Mexican sativa into the mix. And later a Colombian landrace was added, most likely Colombian Red, in the late 1970's. Eventually an Afghani Indica was bred in, but they did not like the results entirely, so they back crossed it with the Colombian Red again before they found what they were looking for. This original set of F1 seed stock are what brought P. Alberni Pinebud, P.A. Purple, and other notable strains to come from that region at that time.
But that still doesn't cover how it became Romulan, and the last interesting connection to our founder Jake. "Romulan Joe" is who brought the strain to the masses initially. Most everyone knows this part of the story, but many also get things mixed up. Joe was not a Vietnam veteran, he was too young for that. His family owned a Nursery in Southern California, the same Nursery that Jake's father frequented to get his supplies. Joe worked at his families nursery when he was young, and a teen. He often helped load trucks, and generally help customers out once they had paid. This over time developed a friendship and connection, and eventually led to Joe getting a hold of a cutting of what he later named Romulan.
That exact strain, was Joe's and Joe's only and it should be noted that the specific "Joe's Cut Romulan" has essentially been lost to time as currently no known growers/breeders still have his original cloned plant alive. The Romulan we grow here, is something very similar to the famous Joe's cut of Romulan, but not the exact same thing. Rather it is a slightly different version than what Joe had, and should be thought of as closer to Vic High's Romulan cut. Our's is a pure original Romulan that has not been crossed with anything else, and differs in that she has larger yields with more terpene complexity involving a strong skunkiness and pine.
That leads us to 2016, when our founders father passed away in his sleep. And shortly after his close friends began to pass as well. Eventually Jake found himself the caretaker of this plant he had grown up around his whole life. He had minimum growing experience, but being a USMC Veteran himself, he felt a debt of gratitude to the men who had created this plant. It wasn't just his father and his involvement, it was all of them working together for decades to create what they felt was perfectly suited for their unique needs. Any Veteran with PTSD will tell you, that you simply cannot explain what its like to be in their head. And Jake himself felt that Romulan, uniquely over any other strain, brought him to a feeling of being centered and in control of his life. All of this mounted up, and drove Jake to attempt to give clones away to any who wanted them. He sought out large breeders, growers, and providers all in an attempt to give clones freely and spread her back around again.
He was immediately met with hesitation, and he had no idea what he was actually getting into. People told him that they had heard stories before. That others came before him with fantastic claims. That proof was required, and an explanation was demanded. So he calmly explained his story, and one by one they all agreed that Jake knew things he should not know, if he wasn't somehow telling the truth. Friendships were made, partnerships were started, and eventually Romulan Genetics became a full fledged breeding company. Determined to bring the medicinal benefits of Romulan to all of those who need it. To bringing a strain back from the shadows. And to eventually make our own strains, tailored to those with medical issues and mental conditions.
We may not have been any part of creating Romulan, but we will be a part of keeping her around for years to come.
